Introduction: What’S this book Really About?

Several guidebooks have been written about Chicago—most of them for tourists simply passing through and mainly interested in the City’s hot spots. These books are great for tourists, but fall short for the newcomer or native wishing to experience life beyond Navy Pier or the Magnificent Mile. If you’ve been there, done that, loved it, but are now ready to sink your teeth into what Chicago really has to offer, this book’s for you. Get A Life! In the City®  Chicago is for the young and young-at-heart adult living in or near the City who’d rather participate than spectate (I know this isn’t a word, but it rhymes J). In other words, this guidebook won’t tell you where to go to simply watch a great play or a stand up comedian. Instead, you’ll find out about places like the Actor’s Gymnasium and the Second City Training Center that will teach you—an everyday person with a day job, who likes to try new things for kicks—how to act, write her own play, do improv or a stand up comedy act in front of a live audience. This guidebook won’t tell you where to go to see a ball game. What you’ll get instead is information on adult leagues offered by Chicago Sports Monster or Chicago Sport and Social Club for amateur athletes and wannabes alike, who’d like to join a volleyball, football, softball, soccer or basketball team to have fun and to meet other active individuals who love sports.

Have you ever wanted to be quick on your feet and funny like Wayne Brady and Drew Carey on the hit TV show “Who’s Line is it Anyway?” Or better yet, are you looking for a fun and “quirky” way to relax, have a little fun, and be more at ease around people? If you answered “yes” to either of these questions, improv at The Second City Training Center may be the thing for you. This world-renowned school holds classes and workshops all year round, in Improvisation, Acting, and Comedy Writing for beginning to advanced students. And since many companies are seeing the value of improv skills in business, corporate classes are also offered. Whether your goal is to break into the entertainment industry or to simply have some fun, chances are The Second City Training Center has something for you.
